A claims analysis was performed on a portion of Blue Cross/Blue Shield of TN insureds population between October 2004 and Sept 2006. Claims were compared with episodes of low back care and treatment between M.D.'s and D.C.'s. Paid costs for episodes of care initiated with a D.C. were almost 40% less than episodes initiated with an M.D. Evan after risk adjusting each patient's cost, it was found that episodes of care initiated with a D.C. were 20% less expensive than episodes initiated with an M.D. Their conclusions were that their beneficiaries in theri sampling frame had lower overall episode costs for treatment of low back pain if htey initiated care with a Doctor of Chiropractice, when compared to those who initiated care with an M.D.
